Rule 1: Only drawn cards determine what pieces can be moved.
In regular chess play, the person with white starts the game by making a move, then the opponent
follows. In Chance Chess white also starts first, but the move is made by drawing a card from the
shuffled deck and moving only the piece that is shown on the card, then it is the opponents turn to
draw a card. If the piece that you draw cannot be moved you automatically pass. If a player draws
a card with a piece that the player does not wish to move, he simply passes. At no time can a game
progess until a player who has drawn card moves or passes.
Rule 2: When an opponents King is checked, the opponent is given a free move to remove their
king from the check. That checked player then takes his regular turn in drawing a Chance Chess
card.
Special note to the player that is going to check the opponents King--with the free move rule in
mind remember that on a checked threat the king can move out of check, block the check or
capture the threatening piece, then he draws a card and moves again!! In other words when you
check an opponent he will have two moves in a row before you draw again.
Rule 3: When a player draws the "Reshuffle card" that same player reshuffles the entire deck and the
same player resumes the game by drawing first.
The game is not ended until your opponents king has been checkmated or both players agree to a
draw or a player resigns.
Rule 4: The only time a player can "Castle" is by drawing a "Move King" card.
Normal chess rules apply here when the "Move King" card has been drawn.
Rule 5: No opponent can capture the other opponents piece unless they have drawn the appropriate
card that enables them to do so.
In other words if your pawn is in position to capture your opponents queen, you must draw a "move
pawn" card or the "move any piece card" in order to capture the queen.
To start the game the chess set is set up as you would in a regular chess game. The 101 Chance Chess cards are placed face down on either side of the chess board. The player who has drawn white goes first to start the game and draws a card form the top and lays it face up next to the pile. That player can only move the chess piece that is shown on the face of the card unless he draws the "any piece" card, in which then he can move any chess piece he wishes. It is then the opponents turn and the fun has started!
